The Nichi Bei Times, which has been covering the Northern California Japanese American community for 63 years, will cease publication after its Sept. 10 issue.
Earlier this month, the Nichi Bei Times board of directors’ voted to cease operations for the San Francisco-based publication. Nichi Bei Times Vice President and English Edition Editor Kenji Taguma has formed the Nichi Bei Foundation with a new board of directors and hopes tocontinue publishing the paper as a nonprofit.
The media is taking a beating from the recession and ethnic media isn’t immune. We at Hyphen welcome the Nichi Bei Foundation to the nonprofit struggle to keep independent, community media alive.
