On June 27, over 130 athletes in seven age divisions, ranging from 2 1/2 years to 30 years and older, participated in the 2010 Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) Track Meet at the Palo Alto High School Track.

Families and friends throughout Northern California gathered early at the track to set up their umbrellas and prepare for a day of fun in the sun. A variety of track and field events were held including child competitions such as the softball throw and the soccer kick. In the spirit of friendly competition, participants shared a potluck lunch.

This year marks the fifth year that the JCCCNC has hosted the track meet, which has its roots in the San Francisco Japanese American Citizens League Nisei Olympics, first held in 1953. Many of the event’s original organizers had participated in the Japanese YMCA Nisei Olympics, held successfully for nearly a decade until Japanese Americans were forced to evacuate in 1942 due to World War II.

Carrying on the tradition from the early Nisei organizers, the current planning committee is comprised of Sansei and Yonsei who once participated in the JACL Olympics as youngsters. The many volunteers included Craig Hamakawa, Dean Kumagai, Michelle Nieda, Alice Kawasaki, Tom Oshidari and Mike “Jakes” Uyeno.
