Shimizu, Tashiko, born September 6, 1925, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2010.
For over 40 years she was a dedicated business owner in San Francisco’s Japantown. Through her businesses she had the opportunity to befriend Red Foxx and Rikidozan, the famous Japanese wrestler, and have Ray Charles play in her bar. After retiring, Tashiko spent much of her time in Japantown with her lifelong friends. Many knew her as the self claimed “Queen of Buchannan Mall.” In her final years Tashiko spent time with her companion Miyo, who was like a daughter to her. Together they enjoyed outings in Japantown, especially at Tak Matsuba’s restaurant Bushi-tei. Tak described Tashiko as a woman he enjoyed to match wits with.
Tashiko will be dearly missed by those who knew her best. She was an elegant woman who brightened every room she entered and always knew how to make others smile. She is survived by her brother and niece in Japan.
A memorial service will be held on July 27, at 11 a.m., at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco, 1881 Pine Street San Francisco, CA 94109.
