LOS ANGELES — Izumi Miyake joins the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a member of Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, it was announced Feb. 1. Miyake is its newest staff attorney who will assist domestic violence survivors.
Miyake, who is fluent in Japanese, will focus on outreach to the Japanese community, and on providing family law and immigration services to low-income immigrant survivors of domestic violence. Miyake, a graduate of City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law, has a demonstrated history of public interest work as an advocate for the rights of low-income communities.
She has worked or volunteered for several public interest organizations, including The Legal Aid Society in New York City, a welfare advocacy program at CUNY and CAAAV: Organizing Communities (formerly Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence) in the Bronx.
Miyake will work as part of APALC’s Legal Services Unit, which provides legal assistance to victims of domestic violence in the Asian and Pacific Islander community, specifically in the areas of family and immigration law.
“Domestic violence continues to be a critical issue within the Asian Pacific Islander community,” said Betty Song, supervising attorney of the Legal Services Unit.
“Based on Izumi’s long history of advocating and representing low-income and immigrant community members, she will undoubtedly make a great impact in expanding our domestic violence services to the Japanese community,” Song added.
