Rosa Parks JBBP’s auction fundraiser

The Rosa Parks Japanese Bilingual Bicultural Program (JBBP) will hold its 2011 Auction Fundraiser, entitled “Building Bridges,” on Saturday, March 19 at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California, located at 1840 Sutter St. in San Francisco’s Japantown from 6 to 10 p.m. in the gym.

The public elementary school program has taught Japanese to students from kindergarten through fifth grade for 38 years.

According to a letter sent by the JBBP Auction Committee, native Japanese-speaking instructors teach the language to more than 200 students each year, in addition to math, reading and other subjects taught in English by credentialed teachers.

The committee also stated that California’s budget crisis caused the school district to cut Rosa Parks’ funding, and is expected to cause further reductions, which “could imperil the Japanese language program, despite its success.”

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $35 at the door.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. A silent auction will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. During this time, hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there will be a no-host bar. The live art auction, jan ken pon survivor game and raffle will be held from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

No childcare will be provided at the event. School-aged children are welcome with paid tickets, but they must remain under the supervision of their parents/guardians during the event.

The raffle prizes include: Apple 32 GB iPad, Nintendo Wii Bundle (not available at stores), a Flip 4G Ultra HD video camera and Kindle 3G + WiFi. The winners do not need not to be present at the event.
