LETTERS: The ‘joy, challenges and essence of being a hapa’

Note: The following letter was sent in response to the “In Mixed Company: Multiracial academics, advocates and artists gather for Hapa Japan Conference” article that was published in the May 26 – June 1, 2011 issue of the Nichi Bei Weekly.

Thank you, Alec, for your excellent article on the Hapa Japan Conference held at UC Berkeley. It was the most moving article I have read on the topic of hapas. Your writing brings a wonderful visual picture to the reader.

Many of us have been researching the topic of hapas for three decades. This conference brought many of us together again. Your coverage of the conference brought pride and happiness to all of us. Too many times, news coverage of the topic misunderstands the issue and the resulting articles portray hapas as confused and dysfunctional. You truly portrayed the joy, challenges and essence of being a hapa.

Good luck with your career.  Thank you again.
