FUKAMI, MITZI MITSUKO passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 30, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Junzo Fukami, devoted mother to Dianne (Gerry Nakano) and Jill (Daniel Heitmann), loving grandmother to Lindsay, Kenichi, Hillary and Koji. Sister to Alyce Shimakawa, Ted Murano and the late Chiyo Yamada. Mitzi was born in Stockton, Calif. to Shigeki and Chiye Murano. Like the other Japanese Americans on the West Coast, she was incarcerated during World War II, first at Gila, Ariz. then Tule Lake in California. The family initially resettled in Cleveland, OH before returning to Stockton where Mitzi finished high school and attended junior college. At age 23 and living in San Francisco, she met the love of her life, Junzo Fukami. They married in 1955, spending 52 years together until his death in 2006. In addition to her daughters and grandchildren, she leaves many nieces and nephews and her close cousins and dear friends Yotch Takahashi and Yuri Kawamura. The memorial service is private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mitzi’s memory be made to the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) at 1840 Sutter St., San Francisco 94115.
