AKAHOSHI, GRACE FUMI, 100, of San Jose passed away peacefully on Oct. 9, 2013. Born in Walnut Grove, Calif., Grace was the second daughter of Miwa Sano and Niichi “Ben” Noyoshi/Tatsuda.

She married the late Joe Yoshiharu Akahoshi in 1937 and moved to San Jose, where she was active at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, Kumamoto Kenjin Kai and in other community organizations. She and her family were interned during WWII at Amache, Colo.

She will be fondly remembered by her daughter, Adrienne Reiko Iwanaga; son, Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi (Karen); her sister, Elsie Kagehiro; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Known as “Laughing Bachan,” she imbued temple activities with her inventive and creative entertainment programs. She was artistic and talented, as seen in her ikebana, art creations, choir participation and choreography. She leaves a legacy of joyful memories and many friends.
In celebration of her life, a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin at 4 p.m.
