LETTERS: Reasons for AAPIs to support Hillary Clinton

Dear Editor:

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders could have unprecedented sway in the upcoming presidential election, and we have compelling reasons to back Hillary Clinton.
Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in the U.S. and 15 percent of eligible California voters. Nearly one-third of Asian Americans live in California, and if we throw our support behind Clinton, we can demonstrate our political strength.

Clinton’s track record on heath care, immigration and the economy demonstrate that she’s a progressive who gets things done.

As first lady, for example, she helped lead the creation of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which partnered with states to provide health insurance for low-income children whose parents earned too much to qualify for Medicaid. CHIP was a significant victory, the largest expansion of health insurance coverage for children in the U.S. since Medicaid passed in 1965. Clinton made clear 23 years ago that she believed in universal health coverage and followed up her intent with action.

Clinton is also sensitive to issues affecting Asians. An ally of immigrant communities, Clinton led the Obama administration’s pivot to the Asia-Pacific region during her tenure as secretary of state. She respects the complex ties that Asians and Pacific Islanders have to their places of origin and the high value we place on family reunification; she supports comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

That is why I urge you to vote for Hillary Clinton.
