OBITUARY: Miyuki Otake

OTAKE, MIYUKI, 89, passed away Aug. 4. A loving wife, mother, teacher and artist, Miyuki was born in Vacaville and educated in Japan before returning to the U.S. after WWII and marrying Edward Kazuo Otake. She taught at Kinmon Gakuen in San Francisco (1967 – 1971), Lakewood, Colorado (1972 – 1977), and established the Japan Calligraphy Education Foundation Branches in Lakewood (1977) and San Francisco, “Nihon Shuji” (1979). She was a member of the J.A. Religious Cultural Center, Concord and Pleasant Hill Senior Centers and East Bay Artists Guild. In her spare time she prepared, displayed and demonstrated her various art forms, specializing in Roketsu-zome and Sumie. She is survived by her children, Julia, James and Katherine; four grandchildren; and relatives in California, Illinois, Hawaii and Japan. Funeral services are private however a display of select art pieces and celebration of her colorful life will be held at the Concord Senior Center, 2727 Parkside Circle, Concord, CA on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. For questions call (925) 375-5402.
