San Francisco elects Paul Miyamoto sheriff

Paul Miyamoto has been elected San Francisco’s new sheriff in the Nov. 5 election.

According to the Bay Area Reporter, he will become the first Asian American sheriff in California.

Sheriff Vicki Hennessy is retiring, which opened up the position.

Lt. Ron Terry, who initially ran against Miyamoto for the position, withdrew from the race in August, leaving Miyamoto unopposed in the election.

Miyamoto ran unsuccessfully against Ross Mirkarimi in 2011.

Miyamoto has served in the Sheriff’s Department for more than 20 years.

Additionally, he serves on the board of the National Association of Asian American Professionals’ San Francisco Bay Area chapter.
