Richard Seiichi Endo
May 29, 1938 – Dec. 28, 2019
ENDO, RICHARD SEIICHI, 81, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2019 after a quick and sudden decline due to leukemia. He was the dearly loved and devoted husband of Emilie, father of Traci (Mike) Inouye and Christine (Hideki) Hirabayashi and Jichan to Mason, Kendall, Emi, and Ko. An Oakland native, Richard was the oldest son of Ichiro and Fumiye Endo and a cherished elder brother and cousin within the extended Endo family across the West Coast and Utah. He graduated from Oakland Tech High School and earned an AA in electronics from Laney College, as well as lent his height to various winning basketball teams in his youth. After working in Los Angeles and serving in the US Army, he eventually made his home in Sunnyvale with his family where he ultimately retired after 35 years at Hewlett Packard. Richard loved to golf with friends and was an avid sports fan, faithfully rooting for all Bay Area teams…especially the SACBC and Tri-City basketball teams on which his grandchildren played.
Richard lived a life of true kindness and earnest compassion for others and served as a dedicated leader of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist community throughout his life. In addition to serving as a Dharma School teacher for 40 years, he served for decades as a Mountain View Temple (MVBT) Board member, four terms as MVBT President, and two terms as Coast District President. He served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Institute of Buddhist Studies and Treasurer of the BCA Endowment Foundation, as well as held various positions within the Buddhist Churches of America cabinet over the years.
Richard will be remembered for his kind smile and welcoming heart. A funeral will be held January 26 at 1pm at the Mountain View Buddhist Temple, 575 N. Shoreline Blvd.
