A 17-year-old Greenbrae, Calif. resident drowned after falling from a boat in Lake Tahoe, the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The teen was identified as Myles Kawashima, who was entering his senior year at Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif. The medical examiner determined the cause of death July 6, authorities said.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said a distress call came from a boat in Secret Cove on the east shore at around 6:20 p.m. July 5. The occupants of the boat were between 17 and 18 years old.

Aaron Meier, a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Wildlife, an agency that investigates boating incidents, said Kawashima began struggling almost immediately and was already submerged by the time his friends were able to pull him from the water.
