We are deeply saddened to report that T. TED YONEDA passed away on Thursday, May 16th.

Ted was fondly known as Teddy Bear to many of his friends and especially the girls he coached throughout the years.

Ted graduated from Hilo High School in 1951 and enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. In 1952, he enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In 1953, he was drafted into the army and served from 1953-1955. After being discharged, he became a teacher at Hookena, Kona-Hawaii where he met and married Suellen (Hayashi) Yoneda, who also was a teacher at Hookena. In 1999, Ted retired from Byron Boys Ranch where he taught English and Drivers Ed for 32 years.

Ted was involved in many different organizations and clubs: Asahi Men’s Fastpitch Softball, Asahi Golf club, Nikkei Golf club, Stockton Judo club, Kamali No Hawaii, and the JACL where he was President from 1972-1974.

Ted began his coaching career in the early 1970’s. He started coaching his four children in various leagues: Little League, Bobby Sox Softball, and Port City Softball. After his kids grew up, Ted continued to coach many ASA youth teams: California Rainbows, California Frost, Delta Fire, Nor Cal Tremors, Nor Cal Challenge, and California Grapettes. Other teams he coached included Woman’s A and B teams: Rite Way Construction, Union 76, and Buchmiller Plastering. He also coached at San Joaquin Delta College and St. Mary’s High School. After “retiring” from fastpitch softball, Ted started coaching several Co-Ed teams: Clavary Presbyterian, Komure Farms, Personal Financial Coaches, and DeParsia Restaurant and Catering.

In 1983, St. Mary’s High School started the T. Ted Yoneda Softball Tournament. In 2008, Ted was inducted into the Greater San Joaquin Amateur Softball Association’s Hall of Fame and in 2017, Ted was inducted into the St. Mary’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ted is survived by daughters Maryam (David) Davis of Stockton, Jayne-Lei (David) Goad of Acampo, and Elane (Mark) McCarty of Ripon, and son Theodore (Cheryl) Yoneda of Fairmont, WV., Granddaughters, Courtney (Grayland) Walter, Taylor (Chevy) Buchanan, Madison (Bill) Doyle, and Grandsons, Ezra and Issac Yoneda.  reat grandchildren, Liam Aguilar, Apollo and Kiyomi Walter, Holden and Aeriss Buchanan, and Suellen Doyle, nieces Cassie Petrie, Melanie Russell, Elena Owens, Tessi Iha, Kristi Hayashi, and Kendra Jitchaku, and nephews Eric Hayashi, Eric and Russell Ogi.

Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Suellen Umeko Yoneda, parents Mojiro and Alice (Tomita) Yoneda, sister Jane (Yoneda) Ogi, brother-in-law Howard Ogi, and nephew, Greig Ogi.

Ted’s viewing, Military burial, and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 29th. The viewing will be at 9:00 and the burial at 10:30 at Cherokee Memorial in Lodi. The Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 at Calvary Church (2343 Country Club Blvd) in Stockton.
