“Free Chol Soo Lee,” the documentary by Julie Ha and Eugene Yi about the first national pan-Asian movement to free a Korean immigrant for a crime he did not commit, was nominated for three Emmy Awards by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in July.

The movement to free Lee, covered extensively by Sacramento Union investigative reporter KW Lee, helped to inspire a generation of young Asian American activists.

The 45th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented at the Palladium Times Square in New York City on Sept. 26 and will stream on NATAS’ streaming platform online and via The Emmys app.

“Free Chol Soo Lee” was nominated in the “Best Documentary,” “Outstanding Historical Documentary” and “Outstanding Promotional Announcement: Documentary” categories.
