UC Berkeley’s Center for Japanese Studies will sponsor “Disaster, Relief and Volunteering for Civil Society in Post-3.11 Japan” from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Institute of East Asian Studies, located at 2223 Fulton, on the 6th Floor, in the Institute of East Asian Studies Conference Room. David H. Slater, an associate professor of cultural anthropology and Japanese studies at Sophia University in Tokyo, will speak. The talk will review the different stages of the disaster, the subsequent relief efforts, the ways in which information, people and goods have circulated throughout Japan, and the different types of volunteering that have made such a difference. Slater will discuss some of the possible options for volunteer work in the coming months. The event is free. Info: cjs-events@berkeley.edu or (510) 642-3156.
