The banquet is held both in remembrance of Executive Order 9066 and in order to honor the works of local dignitaries, Assemblymember Juan Arambula, Charles Pashayan, and David “Mas” Masumoto — who have supported the Nikkei community and its efforts to educate the public about the incarceration experience — with the Distinguished American Awards. Masumoto will also serve as the keynote speaker. The event also partners with the Big Fresno Fair to build a new memorial at the fairgrounds that will share the incarceration stories of Nikkei from the Central Valley. More than 5,400 Valley inmates were held at the fairgrounds in 1942 with Nikkei from Amador County when the site served as an incarceration assembly center. The memorial will be dedicated on opening day of this year’s Big Fresno Fair in October.
