So Cal: Itajime shibori tie-dyeing at Gardena

GARDENA — The Bridge: JCI Heritage Center at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (JCI) will hold an itajime shibori workshop led by textile artist, Setsuko Hayashi, Sunday, Feb. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Itajime shibori is a traditional technique for tie-dyeing fabric by bundling the fabric with pieces of wood and string and then dyeing the fabric.  Additional layers of color can be added by repeating this process until all of the desired colors are incorporated into the overall pattern.

Workshop attendees will learn how to create their own designs using these techniques.
The workshop will be held at the JCI Nisei Veterans Hall, 1964 West 162nd St.,
Gardena, Calif. Space will be limited to 40 students. The cost will be $15, pre-registration is required. To sign up for the workshop or for further information, contact the JCI at jcibridge@jci-gardena.org or call (310) 324-6611.
