J-Sei, formerly known as the Japanese American Services of the East Bay, will hold a community discussion on Japanese traditions at the Buena Vista United Methodist Church at 2311 Buena Vista Ave., located in Alameda, Calif. Registration and refreshments begin at 9:30 a.m., with speaker presentations taking place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Guest speakers Jo Takata, J-Sei board member, and the Rev. Ron Nakasone, “Okinawan Diaspora” editor, will take attendees on “an enlightening and fun journey” through how Nikkei practices have been shaped by place of origin, current geography, time and intercultural influence. The panelists will discuss the roots of Japanese traditions and how they have been adapted for life in California with multigenerational and multicultural households. The event is free, and open to the community. RSVPs are requested at (510) 848-3560.
