SF: Japanese American and expansion of the community talk

23 Apr

Nikkei and Retirement will hold an event on Japanese American identity and the expansion of the community, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC). Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu, professor of medicine and Asian American studies at Stanford University, and Stephanie Otani-Sunamoto, an undergraduate student at Stanford, will present a program on “hapa issues” at the JCCCNC, 1832 Sutter St. in SF’s Japantown. The event will explore how community members: define who is included and excluded as Japanese Americans, who makes the boundaries of the community and who the gatekeepers are, whether one’s “Japaneseness” is racial, cultural or acquired through socialization. A Q-and-A format session will be held. The event is free of charge. Info: (415) 567-5505.
