SF: SOMArts Cultural Center’s “At War” exhibit closes

29 Feb

SOMArts Cultural Center’s “At War” exhibit explores identities in conflict, ranging from ethnic, gender, and sexual identity to conflicts of artistic identity indicated by disparate processes, practices and mediums. The “At War” opening reception and performance featuring Peter Max Lawrence and Truong Tran will take place Friday, Feb. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. The poetry and dance performance, entitled “At The Front Line: War Words & War Dance,” will take place Thursday, Feb. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is a suggested donation of $5 in advance, or $7 at the door. Advance tickets are available for purchase at http://atwar.eventbrite.com. Bay Area artists Rachael Dichter, Rick D’Elia, Jennifer Hasegawa, Carolyn Ho, Philip Huang, Macklin Kowal, Daniel Lichtenberg, Daniel Redman and Liz Tenuto will read poetry and performance dances. The closing reception, entitled “At Peace,” will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. Panelists include Rebekah Edwards and Monica Jane Peck, authors of essays and criticism on “At War,” and contributing video artist Daniel Lichtenberg, Tran’s artistic collaborator. The discussion will be followed by a Q-and-A-format session with curators Lawrence and Tran. “Feast of Words: A Literary Potluck (At War)” will take place Tuesday, Feb. 21 (held at 934 Brannan St., between 8th and 9th streets from 7 to 9 p.m., house opens at 6:30 p.m.) where writers and foodies come together to eat, write and share. Award-winning author Maxine Hong Kingston will read a section on war and peace from her memoir “I Love A Broad Margin to My Life.” Kingston will follow her reading with a short writing exercise with the audience. The “At War” theme is inspired by an exhibit of the same name, which will be on view at SOMArts’ Main Gallery through Feb. 29. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $5 with a potluck dish and $12 at the door to the event with Kingston. The gallery is located at 934 Brannan St. (between 8th and 9th streets) in S.F., and is open Tuesdays through Fridays, from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, from noon to 5 p.m. Info: http://feastofwords.somarts.org, feastofwords@somarts.org.
