Julie Otsuka’s latest book, “The Buddha in the Attic,”will be discussed at the monthly meeting of the Japanese American Museum of San Jose book club at 1 p.m. at 535 North Fifth St. in Japantown. The novel tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as “picture brides” nearly a century ago. It traces the picture brides’ lives, from their arduous journey by boat, as they exchange photographs of their husbands, imagining uncertain futures in an unknown land; to their arrival in SF; to the deracinating arrival of war. The book club meets the first Friday of every other month and is always open to new members. Selections are chosen collaboratively at the end of each meeting and align with JAMsj’s mission. Books are available at San Jose public libraries, online book retailers and the museum store. Info: Aggie Idemoto at (408) 268-4440 or aggie@jamsj.org. JAMsj is located at 535 North Fifth St., San Jose.
