So Cal: Manzanar Site annual pilgrimage

The Manzanar National Historic Site will host activities surrounding the Manzanar Committee’s annual pilgrimage. Friday, April 27, the Independence Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of Eastern California Museum will host a public reception at 4 p.m. at the Eastern California Museum, 155 North Grant, Independence, Calif. Exhibits include Shiro and Mary Nomura’s Manzanar collection, the “Personal Responsibility: The Camp Photographs of Toyo Miyatake.” Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28, the Manzanar Interpretive Center (5001 Hwy. 395, six miles south of Independence, nine miles north of Lone Pine, and approximately 230 miles northeast of LA) will offer exhibits, a film and special junior ranger activities for kids. (Open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) Manzanar History Association (MHA) will host a book signing with “Children of Manzanar” editor Heather Lindquist — at the center Saturday, April 28 — as well as the annual “Selected Artists from the Henry Fukuhara Annual Alabama Hills and Manzanar Workshop: art show and sale, which runs through Saturday, May 20. Sunday, April 29, the MHA will host talks and book signings by Lindquist at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Participants are advised to bring their own food and drinks; there are no facilities to purchase food at the site (restaurants and fast food outlets are located in Lone Pine and Independence, which are nearby).
