Benkyodo, the oldest remaining business in Japantown, was opened in 1906 by Suyeichi Okamura and is the last remaining manufacturer of mochi and manju in San Francisco. Besides its bakery counter, its lunch counter provides the neighborhood with standard American cuisine, and a place to meet. Suyeichi passed on the family business to his son, Hirofumi, who operated the store for 30 years before his sons, Ricky and Bobby, took over in 1990, continuing the family tradition. In recent years, its offerings have evolved to include Peanut Butter Mochi, Strawberry Mochi, Blueberry Mochi and Mango Mochi.
