Hokubei Mainichi

1749 Post St.

Hokubei Mainichi, one of the last two Japanese American bilingual newspapers remaining in San Francisco’s Japantown, was established in 1948. It was published five days a week in both English and Japanese. The Post Street building that housed Hokubei Mainichi (L) was one of the oldest buildings in Japantown, and was used most frequently as a Christian church or church annex. A new building called the J-Pop Center was built on the site (R). The Hokubei Mainichi closed in the fall of 2009, shortly after the Nichi Bei Times closed.
