US: Scholarships available for undergrads studying Japanese language or culture

The Japanese government is offering one-year scholarships to currently enrolled undergraduate students majoring in Japanese language or culture.

To apply, applicants must:

• hold U.S. citizenship;

• be born from April 2, 1981 to April 1, 1993;

• be a current undergraduate student majoring in fields related to Japanese language or Japanese culture and have studied in a university for more than one year as of April, 2011;

• be enrolled as an undergraduate student outside Japan at the time that they arrive in and leave Japan;

• be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks of the starting day of the study course set by the university (programs begin in October as a general rule) and must have sufficient language ability to take classes at Japanese universities in Japanese.

A Japanese language examination is required of all applicants, and an interview in English will follow the exam. The language examination will be conducted on Tuesday, March 15, at the Japan Information Center in San Francisco.
The applications must be received by Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 5 p.m.
